Summer Project - Day 15 - We have Butterfly's

Sunday morning (day 15) we woke up to quite a surprise...our butterfly's were out and about. It was pretty fast, I wasn't expecting it for another 7 days but I was grateful because staring at the still cocoons was getting a little old. We missed them breaking out and spreading their wings and all that fun stuff but we did get to see their wings take color. While it says you can keep them and feed them sugar water for another 7 days, I was afraid we might lose one in the house so we released them in our backyard so we can make sure they get plenty to eat.

We got some flowers from the yard and put sugar water on them so that they could eat. Here they are, well two of the three. We started with 5 caterpillars, got 4 cocoons, and ended up with 3 butterfly's.
All that red stuff is the from their wings. They give off a red liquid that gives them color, it takes a few days so we got to see them go from completely white to the beautiful orange.

Ready to release them in the backyard...of course they know to stay in our yard and not leave because we told them we would take good care of them if they did.

The top is open, its kind of hard to see but that spec there is the butterfly getting ready to fly out...

...and there it goes! This was a great summer project for us, I can't wait to get the lady bug farm...that will be our next project!
